Walks And Walking – Essex Walks Waltham Abbey Lee Valley Walking Route

Walks And Walking – Essex Walks Waltham Abbey Lee Valley Walking Route

Waltham Abbey is absolutely steeped in history with most of it surrounding Waltham Abbey Church, which was a surviving Norman church from the abbey dissolved by King Henry VIII. There are plenty of highlights along this leisurely Essex walk which includes the Royal Gunpowder Mills, plenty of rural countryside walking routes and the popular Lee Valley Regional Park.

Just the standard walking clothes and you can always do with a decent pair of walking boots but other than that pack a good walking jacket in your rucksack and you are good to go!

We parked at Cornmill Meadows car park and then walked to the gravel path at the signpost where we then walked straight ahead through the woodland to join the stream at Cornmill. At Cornmill stream we turned right so that the stream was on our left hand side as we followed it down to the footbridge where we then turned right to then walk next to the Royal Gunpowder Mills fence.

With the Royal Gunpowder Mills fence to our left hand side we continued our walk until we reached the cross field pathway to the next woodland area, Alder Forest, where we then followed the field edge track with the small stream on our left hand side which was signposted to Hook Marsh.

We then turned left on to Fishers Green Lane and on to a car park with a notice board where we carried straight on to cross over two footbridges across streams to a kissing gate signposted on the right hand side to Ware. We followed the gravel track to the picnic area next to Seventy Acres Lake on our left hand side in the Lee Valley Regional Park.

We continued walking along the gravel track until we reached a signpost for Lee Valley Park farms and Nazeing to then cross the footbridge where we then turned left where we then passed Bittern Watchpoint where we then reached the access road to the electricity sub-station. We then continued our walking route along the riverside path to a tarmaced road.

We then turned right and then left through the kissing gate and contiued to walk straight ahead where we passed a bird watching station on our left which overlooks the marshland. At the entrance to the Lee Valley Sailing Club we walked over two stiles to our right hand side and then walked along the edge of the field with the Lee Valley Sailing Club on our left hand side.

We continued along this pathway as it started to bear right climbing slighlty upwards until we reached the next stile at the top where we then followed the signpost to Clayton Hill. At the kissing gate we then crossed over the wooden footbridge to Coleman’s Shaw where we then turned right and onto the B194 road which we then walked downhill to a T-junction.

We then turned left at the Coach and Horses Pub crossing over the road to Waltham Road and then uphill passing Denver Lodge Farm on our right hand side to then cross a stile on our right following the edge of the field track where we then reached Galleyhill Wood. We then crossed the next stile and continued our walk with the woodland on our right hand side to a break in the trees which we then walked through turning right at the path crossing to join a wide grassy green lane path to Aimes Green.

Although quite leisurely we were now starting to feel the benefit of this walking route (What I really mean is starting to feel quite tired!) and we were qwuite pleased to be in the last short section of this walk. We then turned right just after Aimes green before turning left at the houses and on to Claygate Lane and out by Eagle Lodge where we then crossed over the Crooked Mile Road to a meadow. We then turned left through the kissing gate and back to the car park some 3 hours and just over 7 miles later.

Walks And Walking – Essex Walks

Essex walks is a selection of walking routes I have completed in the county of Essex.

Welcome To Essex - Perfect for walks and walking

Welcome To Essex - Perfect for walks and walking

The main areas covered include walks in Epping, Epping Forest, Theydon Bois, Chingford, Wanstead Park, Gilwell Park, Upshire, High Beach, Loughton and Ambresbury Banks as well as walking in Coggeshall, Kelvedon, Thorndon and other areas of the Essex countryside and coastline.

Essex walking routes cover farmland, small valleys, slight hill climbs, coastal walks, ancient forest and woodland walks. Walking in Essex is suitable for most walkers of any ability and does not require any professional walking accessories, like walking poles or a full rucksack of outdoor gear, specialist trekking clothes or camping equipment, as you are always close to public transport.

Essex walks require no real technical walking clothes but a sensible pair of walking boots or walking shoes are always recommended where the only threat to a thoroughly enjoyable walk would be stinging nettles, the occasional potholes in the ground or muddy pathways.

Please visit the rest of my Walks And Walking website for more detailed walks in Essex and even more UK walks which are all available completely free to read, print, walk and share. You can also post your own walking routes, hiking routes, trekking routes, mountain walks, hill walks, mountain climbs and all other types of outdoor activities on my Walks And Walking Facebook page and also on the Walks And Walking Twitter page.

Happy Walking!

Walks And Walking – Essex Walks Hainault Forest Country Park Walking Route

Walks And Walking – Essex Walks Hainault Forest Country Park Walking Route

This walking route started at the entrance to Foxburrows Farm in Hainault Forest Country Park in Essex. I plotted this walking route from Hainault Forest where I joined the Three Forest Way following the London Loop to Chingford which was a mixture of ancient woodlands, forests, farmland, nature reserve and some village roads.

Standard walking clothes for today; walking trousers, walking boots, t-shirt and a waterproof jacket in my rucksack.

From the bottom right hand corner of the second car park, opposite the entrance to Foxburrows Farm, I walked up the wide grassy path towards the beacon at the edge of Hainault Forest Country Park. Just behind the beacon was an entrance to the ancient woodland where I turned sharp left to join the Three Forests Way. I followed this pathway all the way down to the road passing straight ahead at the signpost towards the childrens play area and a second signpost towards Hainault.

When the path bent round to the left by the footbridge I continued to walk straight ahead where the path narrowed and was a little overgrown to then turn left at the road edge and then right through the gap, crossing the road and then turning right to walk uphill towards Chigwell Row. At the kissing gate entrance to the Chigwell Row Wood local nature reserve I followed the main pathway into the wood to join the London Loop signposts.

After turning right in the wood by the London Loop signpost I exited Chigwell ROw Wood to turn right and walk straight up by the tennis courts to reach a kissing gate by the roadside. I then turned left to walk down the road to reach the next set of London Loop signposts where I turned right into Chapel Lane crossing 4 stiles to then reach the Water Works where I turned right to follow the metal green fencing around the perimeter of the water works to a gap in the hedge on my left hand side signposted the London Loop.

I then walked diagonally across the farmland following the very clear London Loop signposts on this section of the Three Forests Way to eventually reach the roadside where I turned right to walk up a short distance to the turn left into some wasteland to then reach the A113 where I crossed over the road turning left and then right into Roding Lane. Walking carefully I admired the large and extremely expensive homes to then turn right at the t-junction to cross over the M25 turning right into the entrance of the David Lloyd centre.

At the London Loop signpost I turned right into the Roding Valley Meadows Nature Reserve following the clear pathways around to a gate signposted the London Loop which then led me close to the shallow river. I couldn’t resist the urge to take a short cut and cross the river at the first opportunity to then walk around the left hand side of the lake and around the pathway to then turn left at the next London Loop signpost to then enter residential housing.

Continuing straight ahead I followed the London Loop signposts to turn left at the small childrens play area which sits just under the London Underground tube train lines. I continued along the road until its end where I turned right to cross over the train tracks to then continuing to follow the London Loop signposts across the fields and 3 kissing gates. Leaving the fields of Hill Farm through a narrow pathway by housing I turned right to walk up North End where I then turned left to walk up to the Buckhurst Hill village sign to cross straight over the road to enter the cricket pitch where I walked around the left hand side to then turn left into the Powells Forest to reach the road where I crossed over to the right hand side of the Warren Wood pub to then walk downhill to the road.

At the roadside edge I turned left to walk along the wide grassy path to then join the road by the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge which is currently being renovated to walk downhill and into Chingford where I only had to wait a few minutes for a bus home! This walking route took me just under 3 hours and covered about 9 miles.
